According to this piece at Pajamas Media, the question is difficult to answer as there is no simple definition of child abuse, even though the concept is clearly a meaningful one. [S]peaking for myself – and only for myself – I think the psychological maltreatment that I suffered as a child did me some good as well as harm. It put a certain iron in the soul as well as gave me certain defects of character.
An interesting biographical note from the article is that Dalrymple considers himself to have been psychologically abused as a child (I think we can safely say by his father):
