I’m curious as to what Dr. Dalrymple means when he says “Here, in his contempt of those who build in concrete, I agree with him.” If he’s disparaging the Brutalist Modern style of architecture then I can’t disagree with him. However, concrete is an extremely useful and versatile construction material, and quite beautiful buildings can be, and have been, created using it.
Just to say I have seen TD’s book “Second Opinion” published by Monday Books on Amazon. It says that it is in stock only in 12-14 days so I don’t know if it has been properly released or not. I couldn’t resist and ordered it. There seems to be a few further scheduled books of his for later in 2010.
He’s criticized the Brutalist style before, but I’m not sure if he would criticize all concrete construction. Can you provide some examples of beautiful concrete architecture? I am curious.
A Google Image search for “concrete architecture” will turn up plenty of examples. I don’t know of any particular samples off the top of my head though.
